Born and raised in Beaumont, Texas Jonathan Owens attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas where he received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a Minor in Business Administration in 2004. He began working with Southeast Texas Medical Associates (SETMA) in 1998 as a runner for the medical practice.  During his time away at Baylor he worked remotely for SETMA and returned full-time in 2002.

In his first major role at SETMA as the Clinical Systems Engineer, Jonathan was responsible for the development and customization of SETMA’s implementation of NextGen’s Ambulatory Electronic Health Record (EHR).  He was also the lead force behind the SETMA’s Business Intelligence Project utilizing IBM’s Cognos software.

As the medical landscape has continued to transition away from fee-for-service and towards pay-for-performance, Jonathan has taken on many roles providing documentation and reporting to support these new payment models.  He has helped ensure SETMA’s compliance with MACRA and MIPS which have both been mandated by the federal government’s Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS).

As a member of SETMA’s Accreditation Team, Jonathan has been instrumental in enabling SETMA to become the only practice in the United States to be accredited by all four Medical Home accrediting bodies. Jonathan’s role on the Accreditation Team has been to tailor SETMA’s EHR to collect and then report on key quality elements to allow SETMA’s attainment of medical home status from NCQA, URAC, Joint Commission and the AAFP.

In his current role as SETMA’s Chief Information Officer, Jonathan has expanded his leadership to numerous aspects of the practice. Under his direction the IT department supports systems for over 300 end users including numerous NextGen products, a robust Citrix environment and Orchard’s Harvest Laboratory Information System which is used by SETMA’s moderate complexity in-house laboratory to name just a few.
