What is a Nurse Practitioner(NP)?
A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse (RN), who has also earned a Master's Degree from an accredited university with a program of study designed to expand and enhance the clinical skills, judgment and knowledge gained in years of experience as a member of the health care team. A nurse practitioner is designated as an advanced practice nurse because of this additional training which includes the diagnoses and treatment of illness. In most cases, an NP is experienced in the care of patients prior to seeking the advanced practice role. In the state of Texas, an NP must hold a master's degree in advanced nursing from an accredited university and must pass a rigorous national, standardized exam to become recognized as an advanced practice nurse.
How does SETMA select their NPs?
SETMA is fortunate to have NPs with experience in making intelligent decisions in clinical situations. SETMA's NPs come a variety of clinical experience, including pediatrics, geriatrics, women's health, emergency nursing, and critical care. Many of SETMA's NPs have decades of experience as registered nurses. Many have of SETMA's NPs been leaders in hospital administration and university nursing education before becoming NPs.
What is the difference between and NP and a Physician's Assistant(PA)?
An NP is licensed and governed by the Board of Nurse Examiners. They can practice independently of physicians, if they choose. PAs are licensed and governed by the Board of Medical Examiners and must work under the supervision of a physician . An NP is a registered nurse prior to moving to graduate school to become an advanced practice nurse. A PA may or may not have had any medical experience prior to becoming a Physician's Assistant. Both can offer you excellent care.
What can an NP do for you?
An NP can diagnose and treat your illness, order diagnostic tests, refer to specialists, and have prescriptive authority, which means that with a few limitations can prescribe medications once they have established a diagnosis. NPs approach healthcare with a special emphasis on patient education , which makes SETMA an ideal environment for the unique skills and perspective of NPs. Because of SETMA's commitment to preventive health and to patient education, SETMA's NPs are able to fulfill their experience and training imperative for helping patients take charge of their health through learning about their illnesses and through becoming responsible for their own care.
NPs' emphasis on education includes making sure you understand the treatment plan and the benefits and limitations of medications. An NP 's commitment to preventive care also focuses on your risk of disease in the future, which can be revealed by attention to to family and personal health history. All of SETMA's NPs are dedicated to giving excellent care and will consult with a SETMA physician as necessary to insure your optimal health and maximum benefit from your visit to SETMA.
NPs and the SETMA Team
Whether a physician, an NP. or a PA, the qualification to provide healthcare is built upon training, experience and testing. However, with the rapid advances in healthcare, continuing medication education is a key to the quality of care you receive. All of SETMA's healthcare providers, physicians, whether primary care or specialist, and nurse practitioners, practice in an environment which continually promotes learning and stimulates discussion of new knowledge and information about disease causation and treatments.
In addition to the electronic medical records and its educational materials, this learning culture is supported by electronic communication whereby ALL SETMA providers are daily challenged with cutting-edge advances in diagnostics and treatments. Thus, SETMA's desire to educate patients is match and exceed by SETMA's desire to advance the learning of physicians and nurse practitioners. In this environment, whether your visit is with an NP or a physician, you are being cared for by a healthcare provider who has been challenged that day and that week with new and exciting initiatives in caring for your health.
The NP's motivation to teach and inform patients is supported by SETMA's LESS Initiative, Diabetes Prevention Program, Hypertension Prevention Program and other efforts to prevent the development of serious life-threatening illnesses before they develop. As a result of this, the mission and mentality of advanced practice nurses, i.e., the mission and mentality of nurse practitioners, and the culture of learning and pursuit of excellence by SETMA are a natural fit.
SETMA is proud of the NPs who practice with SETMA and the NPs who practice with SETMA are proud to be healthcare colleagues with the physicians of SETMA. You can be confident of the care you receive from this team and you can be proud of being a patient of SETMA.
